This buddha is one of the four buddha called 'Tian Wang' in China. They are in charge of four directions of heaven. This carved buddha is the one of west. He usually holds a ball or silk belt in his hand. Chinese believe that this buddha can protect them and therefore people set his likeness in front of their doors or painted him on the door itself.
