This buddha sat in lotus is represented in the position Bhumisparsha Mudra, literally ' Mudra of the grip of the earth with witness '. The right hand clocks towards the ground, fingers touch it whereas the palm of the left hand is turned to the sky. In his last meditation before the awakening, Buddha undergoes the attacks of Mara, personification of the evil, which trys to interrupt his meditation by denying the reality of the awakening of the Buddha, because that there was no witness. This one touched then the ground, to call the earth in to witness.
